As a working mother with little kids and a husband who travels, I am banished to the treadmill in my basement a lot.  When I first started running, I was embarrassed to run outside and gladly made the treadmill my friend. When you run at 60% of your ability, your mind wanders and it can dwell in dark places.  I had a tough run this weekend, not because it was hard, but because it felt impossible.
