Consistency in Training: A Tale of Two Runs

About the end of August, I had a 2.5 hour run. It wasn’t the first long run I’d done, but it was to be my first long run without walk breaks. The evening before the run, I was a partial mess. I was so nervous about having to run straight out. And I kept going back and forth with what if I couldn’t run it all (without walk breaks), and what if .. and what if … 

Today, I had the same 2.5 hour run on the schedule, my longest run since the Dopey Challenge 2 months ago. The prep going into the run was like anyother day. And even when I had to make a small detour in the morning before the run, I wasn’t too frazzled.

Last August’s run was described as “I ran it all !!!!!”.

 I described today’s 2.5 hr run as happy and peaceful.

Just that last statement made me realize today that I’ve come a long way in the past 6 months or so … I’m not the same person that I was when I started training for Ragnar and Dopey.

And I have to thank consistency in training (and focus) for this. The second half of 2013 and the first half of 2014, I was doing CrossFit (and loving it) but running far less. And for the type of (Faux) runner I am, I needed to run to be a runner. Once my focus shifted to running and more importantly, CONSISTENT running, my body and mind began to grow as a runner.

Where once I dreaded that 2.5 hour progression run, I now look forward to the challenges that Mike can possibly set for me and to learn to get through them. 

And the #LongRoadToAugusta doesn’t seem as scary anymore. Still a long road, but not as scary as it was on Dec 5th when I signed up.
